Theatre: Igor Stravinsky's "The Rake’s Progress"

"The Rake’s Progress" of Igor Stravinsky is showing at the Opéra National de Paris-Palais Garnier until March 24. The three-act opera and epilogue was based on William Hogarth's "A Rake's Progress" which Stravinsky had seen in a Chicago exhibition in 1947. The story is about the fall of the young aristocrat Tom Rakewell, who deserted Anne Trulove for the delights of London in the company of Nick Shadow, who turns out to be the Devil. After several misfortunes, Rakewell ends up in Bedlam, a psychatric hospital south of London.
